Darren Goodger -Life Membership of the New South Wales Cricket Association
On Monday 7 September, Darren Goodger was unanimously elected a Life Member of the NSW Cricket Association, recognising almost four decades of outstanding service, leadership and dedication to cricket across New South Wales.
For those of us in the umpiring community, Darren’s contribution goes far beyond an incredible record on the field. He has been a mentor, educator, leader and tireless supporter of countless umpires and colleagues. Darren is always willing to share his knowledge, offer encouragement and help others succeed.
It was wonderful to see Darren receive this recognition, with NSWCA Chair John Knox and Life Member Brian Freedman OAM speaking so warmly about his remarkable contribution to the game.
In his typically humble response, Darren reflected on those who have supported him throughout his journey, particularly his Mum, and the great privilege and satisfaction he has found in building a career in the game he loves.
With many NSWCUSA members there to share the moment, it was a particularly special occasion.

Darren Goodger has devoted almost four decades of service to cricket as an umpire, administrator, educator and leader, making an exceptional contribution to the game across New South Wales.
Born in Grafton, Darren commenced umpiring in 1987-88 while completing his studies at Holy Spirit College Grafton, quickly progressing through the ranks in the Clarence River, North Coast and NSW Country Cricket Associations (NSWCCA). By the late 20th century, he was a member of the Country Umpire Representative Panel, including officiating the Country Championship Final in 1999-00 and being awarded Country Umpire of the Year the following season. In 2002, Darren relocated to Sydney, where he forged a reputation as one of the most revered umpires in NSW. He has officiated in 490 Sydney Cricket Association matches, 340 in First Grade, overseeing 23 finals, including five Belvidere Cup and five First Grade Limited Overs Cup deciders.
Darren’s respect among both players and fellow match officials, driven by his reverence for the game’s laws, spirit and significance in the community, saw him awarded First Grade Umpire of the Year honours on 16 occasions, while also being the recipient of the George Borwick Memorial Award seven times. He was also bestowed with several prestigious representative appointments, including Sheffield Shield, One-Day Domestic and Big Bash matches, numerous national championships and tour matches with international sides. Off the field, Darren's contribution has been equally significant. His devotion to umpire education and development, and the success of country cricket, has seen him hold numerous volunteer leadership positions. From 1995, he supported the operations of various cricket associations in Northern NSW, before filling similar roles with the NSW Cricket Umpires’ and Scorers’ Association (NSWCUSA) upon moving to Sydney.
Darren continues to travel extensively across NSW to support the ongoing health of the game through his role at Cricket NSW as Chief Premier Cricket and Country Cricket Officer. His current position is the culmination of an 18-year tenure across many
umpiring, people development and competition lead roles, which have also afforded him international umpire development opportunities on behalf of Cricket Australia in six different countries. Already a Life Member of multiple cricket organisations, including the NSWCUSA and NSWCCA, Darren’s sustained and distinguished service has left a legacy on cricket throughout New South Wales.
The Life Membership Committee recognises his exceptional contribution through the nomination for Life Membership of the New South Wales Cricket Association.
