The call of “Play” on Day One of this week's First Test Match between Pakistan and South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore saw Association Principal Member Rod Tucker venture into unchartered territory for an Australian Test umpire. By standing in his 96th Test, Rod went where no Australian umpire has gone before and he consequently now occupies sole ownership of the most Tests title, which he was sharing with Daryl Harper. This is a wonderful achievement, as it represents a pinnacle in an officiating career full of highlights.

As a distinguished first-class player of 103 matches, Rod was recruited to umpiring in 2003 under the Cricket Australia development program aimed at attracting elite level players to swap the bat for the hat. His progression was consistent and swift, being appointed to the ICC International Panel in 2008, then promoted to the ICC Elite Panel in 2010, on which he continues to serve. A record of 96 men’s Test matches (and one women’s Test), 107 ODIs and 58 T20Is reflects sustained professionalism, dedication and consistency, which has earned him widespread respect. Known for his unflappable nature and ability to handle pressure situations with balanced composure, his meticulous approach to decision-making, coupled with his deep love for the game, has made him a trusted figure among players, coaches and fans alike.

Rod’s journey from player to ICC Panel umpire is a testament to his passion for cricket and his dedication to upholding the integrity of the game. His exemplary conduct and unwavering commitment to fairness have left an indelible mark on the cricketing world, generating the admiration of all of us who have the privilege of witnessing his work. Sustained excellence is no accident and ‘Budgie’ has certainly earned his place at the top of the perch. We offer congratulations for setting the new record and hope for many more appointments to come.

When the chance to play arises, a keen and excellent golfer (home club Mollymook, NSW), Rod recently spoke in a podcast with Andrew Daddo about golf but also revealed fascinating insights into his playing and umpiring careers and cricket in general. It’s well worth a listen:
